From Words To Workouts

and back again

That’s me in the above photo, second from the left in the white shirt. I’m holding the official National Senior Games torch with a group of new friends I made while attending the Functional Aging Summit in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fifteen years ago, I was sitting at a desk working as a legal assistant. Here’s the short version of how I ended up with this great group of people holding the torch at the Senior Games.

THE WORKOUT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

“3,2,1 Go!” My legs already felt like jello, and this was my third time sprinting up a steep mountain trail. Our fitness bootcamp had just finished 15 squats at the bottom of the hill, and when we got to the top, we were to do 15 push-ups, run back down, and repeat for three rounds. What was I training for, and how did I end up here?

As I mentioned, I was a legal assistant. At the time, I was in my early 40s and looking for a way to shape up my starting to get a little doughy around the edges body. So I joined a bootcamp style fitness class led by an army ranger. It was mind-blowing, and boy did I get into the best physical condition of my life! I had been an athletic kid and played several sports in high school, but nothing more than random exercise classes while in college and as a working adult. I’d never experienced a “workout” like this!

That class changed my body, but more importantly it  helped me change the direction of my life. I fell in love with the physical and psychological benefits of fitness training and left my desk job to become a Fitness Professional.

RETURNING TO WORDS…MY FIRST LOVE

I chose to major in English literature in college because I loved reading great stories, and I enjoyed writing because it helped me sort out my thoughts on any subject. My degree served me well in the administrative jobs I’ve held over the years because clear and concise writing is always a plus in the business world.

Now, as a freelance copywriter, I have the opportunity to combine my love of words with my passion for health and fitness.

Perhaps this metamorphosis from a legal assistant to a fitness professional and then a freelance writer seems unusual. For me, it’s who I’ve become through exploration, education, and pursuing things that bring me joy in life.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I look forward to working with you as we find the words that will convey to your audience the value of your product or service and maybe your story too.
